Senior doctor dies of coronavirus in Pakistan

PESHAWAR: A senior doctor at the Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar passed away of coronavirus on Saturday morning, the hospital’s director Shehzad Faisal confirmed.

According to Faisal, Dr Mohammad Javed, an ENT (ears, nose and throat) specialist, had been diagnosed with Covid-19 a week ago and was on a ventilator ever since.

“He had been fighting on the front lines to combat the coronavirus,” he added.

Pakistan has seen rapid growth in the Covid-19 positive death toll in the past few days credited in part to a loosely implement lockdown. On Wednesday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Provincial Doctors Association (PDA) had strongly recommended complete lockdown and separate hospitals at divisional levels for the infected people to contain the virus.

According to PDA President Dr Aamir Taj Khan, the epidemic required a complete lockdown to enable people to stay home and enforce social distancing otherwise the health system would collapse and all the health workers would end up infected with the virus that would leave the patients in the lurch.
